I know that Indiana Jones is supposed to be based (very loosely) on Roy Chapman Andrews, but that’s only because Andrews had great connections: the American Museum of Natural History, National Geographic, and so on. Not to belittle his amazing accomplishments in any way...but if you want real, cliffhanging, stand-your-hair-on-end adventure, Lawrence Griswold is your man. This is a guy who mixed with cannibals and head-hunters, killer cats and Komodo dragons, pirates and treasure hunters. This is a guy who was in charge of an engineless ship that ran out of water hundreds of miles from port. This is a guy whose obese friend had to be shoe-horned into a canoe (and rapidly shoe-horned out of it when it capsized going down some rapids). This is a guy whose companion almost became a god simply by crushing an attacking jaguar with his enormous bulk. Griswold, who never went out looking for trouble, seemed to cram more of it into a typical day than Indiana Jones managed in a fictional month. - Mike Resnick
